THE DIVINE IMAGE – Steinar Christensen exhibition in Denmark.

Still life series

Russian icons are challenged by the Norwegian artist Steinar Christensen’s colorful photographs. The exhibition “The Divine Image” at The Museum for Religious Art in Lemberg, Denmark, juxtaposes a selection of the collection of Gallery Bodøgaards icons to mr Christensens photographs. The belief in the inherent divinity of Russian icons have been important for their design and attractiveness. Juxtaposing Russian icons to  contemporary photography creates an interesting dialogue on the authenticity of contemporary photography and art, and the reach for the divine. Museum for Religious Art, Lemberg, from 13th of March to 16th of May 2010.

Another review of the Devine Image – by Mette Trolle Rassmussen from the Danish paper Kunstavisen.  Letter to the editor from Sten Abrahams, printed in Holsterbro Dagblad and Lemvig Folkeblad.

Lisa Holden and William Ropp

We are delighted to be representing two new and amazing artists in our  mix of fine art photographers; Lisa Holden and William Ropp.

Lisa Holden Lisa Holden is a British-born artist based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Holden has been integrating performance art, painting and drawing, photography and video, and digital manipulation of these combinations of forms in a manner that is clearly advancing the parameters of art photography and creating a new art methodology/language in the process.  Holden lets herself inspire by myths surrounding feminine icons like Lilith, Lamia and Danae. Her latest body of work explores aspects of duality: beauty and destruction, the flesh and the spirit, order and chaos. This juxtaposition of opposites is echoed in her multi-layered compositions, which sample imagery from early studio photography, classical painting and consumer culture. The final pieces blend analogue and digital imaging, photography and painting where Holden exploits her media and materials to full potential.

William Ropp; Children

William Ropp lives and works in Nancy, France, and is well-known for the unique style in which he captures the mysterious aspects of human nature. Placing his subjects in absolute darkness during extended exposures, he uses a flashlight to “paint” a magical effect of illumination and shadow in what he calls “the dance of light”. His photographs have been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries around the world and his work has been published in several books including one devoted to the Children series, as well as a recently released twenty-year retrospective. William will be in Norway holding workshops and lectures in October – please contact us for more information. Lisa and William are both presented in the latest issue of the Norwegian magazine FOTOGRAFI.

Many of the participants have spent time aboard research ships on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. There they have experienced the melting of the Polar Ice at first hand, and have reflected upon the worrying prognosis for the future, and the warnings articulated by climate researchers. Risør International Photo Festival – “A huge artistic success”

BOARDING HOUSE The first Risør International Photo Festival was a huge artistic success. During the festival, more than 22,000 entries were registered in the 20 participating local galleries. Roger Ballen, the world famous and controversial photographer from South Africa held a lecture at the Peace House, showing his work and explaining his approach to photography. His exhibition at gallery Solsiden 10 was among the most visited and also the most discussed. Ballen said, ”I am an artist and my photographs are quite personal. I like the images to create discussion and to create turmoil and confusion.”

There were very many positive reviews of the festival in the local, national, and international news media. Jim Casper, editor of Lens Culture in Paris, said, ”The Fotofestival in Risør was impressive in all aspects. The artistic level was very high, and the many of the galleries spaces were perfect for exhibiting fine art photography. And the festival itself was very well organized.” Casper said he was thrilled to take the trip from Paris to Risør to experience fine art photography — especially Norwegian photography which is little known outside of Norway. Introducing “Beuchene Skull Study” to the Evolution series.

Evolution - Beuchene

Christian Houge continues his personal exploration of the beautiful and the brutal, the organic and the artificial. He has included the “Beuchene” – (exploding skull) to the “Evolution” series –  please enjoy the beautiful and brutal images and read his artist statement for more insight.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In ‘Evolution’ I explore subjects studied for thousands of years: Evolution and forms of nature, both in the sense of perfection and imperfections. To me, these photographs share the same heritage as the entomologists tedious study who systematized and categorized the many thousands of species in the world. This project aims at a contemporary reinterpretation of evolutionary study, keeping the parameters intrinsic to the medium of photography. The in depth book on human anatomical study made by Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1500 hundreds has inspired me deeply. Da Vincis study of osteology and myology was not only a secretive and groundbreaking work, it was also art. The biological works on jellyfish and other ancient marine animals of Ernst Haeckel and Albertus Seba were also important in my prestudies of this theme. Studying animals and humans in this way as part of science has a beauty in itself, although it can be seem bizarre at first glance, I think.
