Roger Ballen at Stenersenmuseum in Oslo

BOARDING HOUSE We look forward to the opening of Roger Ballens show at the Stenersenmuseum in Oslo. Roger Ballen (1950) was born in New York City and has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, for 30 years. His interest in photography dates to when his mother worked as a photo editor with Magnum Photos in New York, and teenager Ballen befriended the likes of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, and Elliott Erwitt.

Roger Ballen gained a degree in psychology before travelling the world. After six years abroad, he completed a PhD in Mineral Economics and established himself as a geologist and mining consultant in Johannesburg while documenting the small villages of rural South Africa and their isolated inhabitants. Over the past few years Ballen has had well over 100 exhibitions worldwide, including solo shows at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, New York’s Gagosian Gallery, and Toronto’s Clint Roenisch Gallery. Ballens work is  included in some 30 different museum collections.

The exhibition at Stenersenmuseum is curated by Selene Wendt, and will present  images from Outland, Shadow Chamber and the Boarding House series. Some of Ballens images are available here.

Roger Ballen will be present, making an artist talk at 5 pm and the official opening is sceduled to 6 pm on Thursday October 14th. The exhibition lasts till the 23rd of January 2011.

All are welcome!

Christian Houge at Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum

Christian Houge - Moksha The exhibition ‘Border District’ addresses the topic of death as a taboo theme in our time and presents a number of Norwegian and international artists who have approached the phenomenon from varying angles. Some express the feeling of loss and grief when someone close passes away; others train the spotlight on the situation and status of old age, or reflect on our attitudes to the often inconceivable act of suicide. Some works also poses the hopeful question of whether there is anything on the other side; whether there is life after death.

Christian Houge is represented in the show with the Moksha series, an impressive body of work he has been working on for the past 4 years, consisting of still photographs and also a video-installation.

The exhibition has been curated by Haugar’s Tone Lyngstad Nyaas and presents artists such as Eline Medbøe, Jone Kvie, René Holm, Christian Houge, Natasja Askelund, Vanessa Baird, Biljana Djurdjevik, Espen Gleditsch, Astrid Mørland, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Ivan Galuzin and Morten Viskum.  Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum – 23.09.2010-14.11.2010

Artscape Nordland – Steinar Christensen

33 artworks, 33 artists, 33 municipalities; Artscape Nordland is an international art project with invited participants from 18 countries.

This summer Steinar Christensen has been up north to attend to his contribution to Artscape Nordland, the installation “Stella MARIS”. Stella Maris by Steinar Christensen

The project originated in a comprehensive debate about the role of art in society. The County of Nordland, with its 240.000 inhabitants, does not have an art museum – and people must travel long distances to study modern art in museums and galleries. The idea of a collection of modern art in Nordland, one sculpture in every municipality and with the landscape as gallery, was first presented in 1988. The underying idea of the project is that a work of art creates a place of its own through its very presence in the landscape. The sculpture also visualises its surroundings, thus giving the place a new dimension. The dialogue resulting from the encounter between the sculpture and spectator reveals different ways of understanding and interpreting art.

The project officially started in 1992, and was completed in 1998. Sculptures, located in beautiful, varied and often brutal landscapes on the coast of the Atlantic, will be found in 33 of the 45 municipalities in the county. An art gallery without walls or a ceiling – and covering an area of 40.000 km. (Source: www.skulpturlandskap.no)

Still life series 7th LANE – Artisttalk – Steinar Christensen vs curator Arnt N Fredheim. Steinar Christensen’s unique artistic practice operates in future, present and past, with references to both the Dutch Golden Age paintings and a futuristic industrial age. His artist talk will be on his thoughts about art and the driving forces to create, but also about the ways his work can be interpreted. Saturday June 5th at 1 PM.

OKURIMONO 7th LANE – Artisttalk – Christian Houge guides us into a mystery. In Houge’s most recent body of work OKURIMONO, the sense of sameness withdraws and a very different feeling of strangeness creeps up on us. In fact, what this series registers is a remarkable place of alterity in today’s global order, a radical difference bang in the middle of the familiar. Sunday June 6th at 1 PM.

William Ropp; Children

7th LANE – Your portrait made by the French photographer William Ropp.

THE DIVINE IMAGE – Steinar Christensen exhibition in Denmark.

Still life series

Russian icons are challenged by the Norwegian artist Steinar Christensen’s colorful photographs. The exhibition “The Divine Image” at The Museum for Religious Art in Lemberg, Denmark, juxtaposes a selection of the collection of Gallery Bodøgaards icons to mr Christensens photographs. The belief in the inherent divinity of Russian icons have been important for their design and attractiveness. Juxtaposing Russian icons to  contemporary photography creates an interesting dialogue on the authenticity of contemporary photography and art, and the reach for the divine. Museum for Religious Art, Lemberg, from 13th of March to 16th of May 2010.
To enjoy the entire Still life series by Steinar Christensen – click here. A review of the exhibition is published by Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad. Another review of the Devine Image – by Mette Trolle Rassmussen from the Danish paper Kunstavisen.  Letter to the editor from Sten Abrahams, printed in Holsterbro Dagblad and Lemvig Folkeblad.
